Common name: Prairie Rose Scientific name: Rosa arkansa.

    • 1. Color: Pink; may fade to white, or have streaks of darker pink.
    • 2. Height: 6 to 18 inches tall. 1.25 to 2.5 inches in diameter.
    • 3. Leaves: Medium green, pinnately compound, and generally have 9-11 leaflets.
    • 4. Bloom time: June to late summer

Habitat

  • Can be found growing in:
    • 1. prairie
    • 2. uncultivated fields
    • 3. road edges.

Native/Non-native status

The prairie rose is native to Iowa.

Where plant can be found/distributed

The prairie rose is found across the state of Iowa with a higher concentration found in western Iowa.

Interactions with pollinators and animals

Open faced flowers attract a variety of pollinators. The small thorns on stem discourage insects from living on plant.

Notes

In the family of Iowa's state flower; wild rose.
